Google has announced new AI-powered safeguards against fraud and scams for Android 15, aiming to protect users from malicious attacks. During the Google I/O 2024 developers conference, the tech giant revealed that the upcoming Android version will include enhanced protections to fight against fraud.
One of the key enhancements is the protection against malware on OTPs (One-Time Passwords). Generally, OTPs will not be visible in alerts, except for wearable companion apps, which eliminates a common avenue for malware and fraud attacks.
Additionally, Google is extending the restricted settings functionality introduced in Android 13 to safeguard sensitive permissions frequently exploited by scammers. Users will need to grant additional user rights when installing apps from Internet-sideloading sources like web browsers, chat apps, or file managers.
To combat social engineering attacks, including screen sharing, Google is increasing protection for screen sharing in Android 15. Notifications that are automatically hidden and OTPs will be obscured from remote viewers during screen sharing sessions to prevent sensitive data theft.
Furthermore, users will have the option to share the content of a single app instead of their entire screen to protect their privacy. This feature, currently available on Pixel smartphones, will soon be extended to other Android devices.
