Angela McKenzie, a mixed media artist based in Otamarakau near Pukehina Beach, is a creative force to be reckoned with. When she’s not tending to her one-acre country garden, McKenzie can be found in her workshop, bringing chaos to life through her unique art pieces. Her passion for experimenting with textures, shapes, and colors shines through in every piece she creates.

McKenzie’s artistic process is a labor of love that has evolved over the last 25 years of dedicated experimentation. She starts each piece on paper, laying down watercolors and inks before cutting it into a shape and attaching it to plywood. The final touch is pouring resin on top, creating a stunning 3D effect that sets her work apart from traditional canvas and acrylic paintings.

Her journey as an artist began in 1998 when she took a watercolor night class with Paengaroa artist Lois Isaacs. Inspired by Isaacs’ studio and encouragement to experiment, McKenzie delved deeper into the world of art. She pursued formal education, earning a Diploma in Visual Art, an Advanced Diploma in Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

McKenzie’s work has been recognized with several major art awards, including Best in Show at the Lifestyles of the Bay Art Award. She draws inspiration from music, with each piece often reflecting a song’s lyrics or mood. One of her 3D works was inspired by a song by Feist, adding a deeper layer of meaning to her art.

Her creative process is a reflection of her personal experiences and observations of the world around her. McKenzie explores themes of memory, human connection, and the impact of social media on our lives. Each piece is a unique expression of her thoughts and emotions, with unexpected surprises often emerging during the creative process.

Despite the demands of her art, McKenzie also manages a one-acre lifestyle block with her husband, fellow artist Clive Armstrong. The land holds special significance as it represents her family’s farming legacy. McKenzie feels fortunate to work from home, welcoming tour groups to experience her art and garden firsthand.

As she continues to push the boundaries of mixed media art, McKenzie remains committed to her passion for creating. With at least three projects on the go at any given time, she thrives on the excitement of unveiling each new piece. Her dedication to experimentation and storytelling through art sets her apart as a truly unique and talented artist.

Angela McKenzie’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of creativity and the joy of pursuing one’s passion. Through her innovative approach to mixed media art, she invites viewers to explore new perspectives and emotions, making her a standout figure in the art world.
