The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is set to implement new changes to the homework policy, pending approval from the Board of Education. The proposed policy aims to strike a balance between ensuring homework remains beneficial for students while not overwhelming them.

Under the new policy, teachers will have the flexibility to determine the nature, frequency, and length of homework assignments. This shift from a rigid three to five assignments per week model allows educators to tailor homework to better meet the needs of their students. The policy also emphasizes providing support for students seeking help with their homework during class time.

One of the key changes includes the removal of language that previously described homework as “beneficial and important in a student’s overall program.” This signals a shift towards a more nuanced approach to homework that takes into account the individual needs of students.

Many students, parents, and teachers have expressed support for the new policy, citing concerns about the workload and its impact on students’ well-being. Sixth-grader Haohan Wang shared that while the current workload is manageable for him, many of his peers feel overwhelmed by the amount of homework they receive.

The policy also addresses the needs of students with Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plans, ensuring they have access to necessary accommodations and support to complete their assignments. Additionally, the policy discourages teachers from assigning homework over the weekend, recognizing the importance of allowing students time for rest and relaxation.

Overall, the proposed changes to the MCPS homework policy reflect a commitment to supporting students’ academic success while also prioritizing their well-being and mental health.
