Pro-Independence Leader in New Caledonia Urges Supporters to Maintain Resistance Against Paris Government

NICE, France (AP) — The leader of a pro-independence party in New Caledonia, Christian Tein, has called on supporters to “remain mobilized” and “maintain resistance” against the Paris government’s efforts to impose electoral reforms that the Indigenous Kanak people fear would further marginalize them.

Tein, who leads the pro-independence party known as The Field Acton Coordination Unit, made the call in a video message posted on social media. This message comes after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, where Macron pushed for the removal of protesters’ barricades in New Caledonia.

Despite Macron’s efforts, Tein insisted that the barricades will remain in place until French authorities lift house arrest warrants for several party members and scrap the electoral reform that Kanaks fear will dilute their influence.

The unrest in New Caledonia began after a demonstration against the voting reform turned violent, leading to seven deaths and widespread destruction. Macron has stated that he will not force through the contested voting reform and has called on local leaders to come up with an alternate agreement for the archipelago’s future.

As the situation in New Caledonia remains tense, Tein urged supporters to refrain from violence and remain steadfast in their resistance. The ultimate goal, he said, is for the country to obtain full sovereignty.

The ongoing conflict in New Caledonia highlights the deep divisions between Indigenous Kanaks seeking independence and pro-Paris leaders. The road to a peaceful resolution remains uncertain, but both sides are being urged to find a way forward through dialogue and compromise.
