Thousands of protesters clashed with Israeli police in Tel Aviv on Saturday as they demanded the government bring back hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. The demonstrators, carrying photos of abducted female soldiers and banners reading “Stop the war” and “Help,” called for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and new elections.
The protesters, led by the group “Women Protest for the Return of All Hostages,” criticized the government for not doing enough to secure the release of the hostages, including around 100 still held in Gaza. The uncle of one hostage, Carmel Gat, expressed frustration, saying, “Nothing is being done.”
Tensions have escalated in Israel over the handling of the conflict with Hamas, which has resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people and the abduction of 250 others. The bodies of three hostages were recently recovered, adding to the urgency of the situation.
Meanwhile, international pressure is mounting on Israel to end the conflict and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, where over 2 million Palestinians are in dire need. Three European countries have recognized a Palestinian state, and the International Criminal Court has requested arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas officials.
As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, with ongoing bombardments and casualties reported, the need for a resolution to the conflict and the safe return of hostages is more pressing than ever.
