Ukrainian drone successfully targets Russian early-warning radar from unprecedented distance | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A daring drone attack by Ukraine targeted a Russian “Voronezh M” early-warning radar near the city of Orsk in the Orenburg region, a Kyiv intelligence source revealed on Monday. The attack, conducted by Ukraine’s military spy agency, took place on Sunday at a “record” distance, without specifying if any damage was caused.

The city of Orsk, located approximately 1,500 km from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled territory, was the target of this bold move. While there was no immediate comment from Moscow, Russian media outlets reported that a drone had indeed come down in the Orenburg region on Sunday, with no civilian infrastructure being hit.

Russia, being a major nuclear power, relies on its network of radars to detect enemy missile launches and determine if it is under nuclear attack. The Voronezh-type advanced early warning radars, including one in the Orenburg region, play a crucial role in Russia’s defense system.

With Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine ongoing, Kyiv has increasingly turned to long-range drones to target Russian military and energy assets. Recent months have seen a focus on oil refineries, with Ukraine retaliating against Russian strikes on Ukrainian targets.

The use of drones in these attacks has proven effective, with reports of drones flying distances of up to 1,800 km in recent attacks. As tensions continue to escalate between Ukraine and Russia, the use of drones in targeted strikes is likely to play a significant role in the ongoing conflict.
