Scappoose brings Riverhawk softball season to a close | Sports

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The No. 15-ranked Scappoose High Indians pulled off a stunning upset in the first round of the 2024 state softball playoffs by defeating the defending Class 4A state champion and No. 2-ranked The Dalles High Riverhawks with a score of 2-0. The game, held at 16th Street Ballpark in The Dalles, was a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal contest, which The Dalles had won 3-1.

Despite having a losing record and being seeded 15th in the 16-team playoffs, the Indians managed to hold the potent offense of the Riverhawks, who had an average of 11 runs per game, to just three hits. The low-scoring game was tied after three innings before the Indians scored a run in the fourth and added another in the seventh to secure the victory.

The Riverhawks, led by TVC Player of the Year Jeilane Stewart, had opportunities to tie the game but were unable to capitalize with clutch hits. The Dalles’ junior pitcher Despina Seufalemua and sophomore hurler Siyra Faulkner combined to allow eight hits, with three strikeouts and two walks.

The loss marked the end of the season for the Riverhawks, with seniors Kaleyah Crichton-Tunai, Keiliani Crichton-Tunai, LeBreton, and Stewart playing their final game for the team. Despite the disappointment, the seniors can look back on their successful careers that included two Tri-Valley titles, the 2023 state title, and an undefeated league record this spring.
