Southwest Airlines has unveiled its newest seats at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, in collaboration with seat manufacturer Recaro. The Dallas-based carrier showcased the navy blue seats adorned with the signature Southwest heart logo on each headrest, aiming to dispel earlier concerns about their thinness.
Planned for new aircraft deliveries starting in 2025, the seats offer several upgrades over Southwest’s current ones. Recaro customized the headrest and armrest for Southwest, providing a longer armrest and a foldable headrest for neck support or adjustable comfort.
The seats also feature USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a personal device holder, and a tray table with two cupholders. Bill Tierney, Southwest’s vice president of customer experience, emphasized the ergonomic design to enhance passenger comfort and productivity.
Southwest’s larger cabin refresh includes various aesthetic upgrades for new aircraft, addressing concerns about legroom and seat width. Christopher Parker, Southwest’s managing director for inflight experience, clarified that the seats are not slimline and underwent extensive testing for comfort.
While the ultimate test will be the seats’ performance on long flights, Recaro CEO Mark Hiller expressed confidence in the product. However, existing Southwest aircraft will not be retrofitted with the new seats, with the design reserved for new deliveries starting next year.
Despite uncertainties in Boeing’s delivery schedule, Southwest remains committed to integrating these innovative seats into its fleet for a more comfortable and functional passenger experience.
