Middle powers hold the key to preserving multilateralism

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a recent exclusive article for Euronews, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan highlighted the urgent need for middle powers to step up and take on a more active role in global affairs. With major powers facing challenges in working together and smaller countries lacking influence, middle powers like Kazakhstan have a crucial role to play in promoting stability, peace, and development on a global scale.

President Tokayev emphasized the importance of multilateral solutions in a world marked by geopolitical turbulence and persistent conflict. He pointed out that traditional powerhouses are increasingly unable to cooperate, leading to diplomatic stalemates, humanitarian disasters, and escalating tensions in various regions.

Middle powers like Kazakhstan, according to President Tokayev, have the economic strength, military capabilities, and diplomatic acumen necessary to exert significant influence in the global arena. Unburdened by the complexities of superpower politics, these countries can navigate diplomatic terrains and promote compromise and reconciliation.

President Tokayev also highlighted Kazakhstan’s commitment to multilateralism, citing the country’s efforts in nuclear disarmament, biological security, and sustainable development goals. He mentioned Kazakhstan’s role in hosting peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia as an example of the country’s dedication to promoting dialogue and peace.

As the world faces unprecedented challenges, President Tokayev called on all international partners to join in reinforcing multilateralism and investing in a more peaceful and prosperous future. He emphasized the importance of determination, leadership, and dialogue in overcoming today’s challenges and building a better tomorrow.
