Unity Girls’ Basketball Coach Dave Ellars Inducted into Hall of Fame
TOLONO — Unity High School girls’ basketball coach Dave Ellars was recently inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, capping off a successful coaching career that spanned over 30 years. The induction ceremony took place on Jan. 29 at the Rocket Center, where Ellars was surrounded by his family and former players.
The night was made even sweeter as the Rockets secured a 54-46 comeback victory over Warrensburg-Latham, adding to the celebration of Ellars’ prestigious achievement. Reflecting on his coaching journey, Ellars expressed gratitude for the support and recognition he received from the basketball community.
After the conclusion of the past basketball season, Ellars made the decision to retire from coaching, citing the desire to give someone else an opportunity to lead the team. Throughout his tenure at Unity, Ellars amassed a 96-72 record and guided the Rockets to a Class 2A regional title in 2020.
One of Ellars’ fondest memories as a coach was coaching Elyce Knudsen, who set the Rockets’ all-time scoring record and went on to achieve All-American status at Millikin University. Ellars emphasized the importance of the relationships he built with his players over the years, both on and off the court.
Looking ahead, Ellars plans to continue his involvement with the Unity softball team, led by head coach Aimee Davis. While his winter seasons are now free, Ellars remains committed to supporting his granddaughter’s basketball games and improving his golf game.
As he transitions into retirement, Ellars leaves behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship, and success on the basketball court. His impact on the Unity High School community and the lives of his players will be remembered for years to come.
