A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding AIPAC: The Pro-Israel Lobby

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, has been thrust into the spotlight as the Israel-Hamas war continues to escalate. AIPAC’s core mission is to build bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship, making it a key player in shaping American foreign policy towards Israel.

AIPAC’s platform includes supporting security assistance to Israel, promoting peace in the region, and countering Iran’s aggression and nuclear weapons quest. The organization is also known for sponsoring trips for U.S. politicians and aides to visit Israel, fostering stronger ties between the two countries.

Despite the polarized political climate in the U.S., AIPAC has managed to build strong relationships on both sides of the aisle. Politicians who may disagree on other issues find common ground in their support for AIPAC. Notable AIPAC-backed politicians include Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark.

According to OpenSecrets, AIPAC has spent nearly $60 million on lobbying efforts since 1998. While AIPAC itself does not directly contribute to candidates, its affiliated PACs often support candidates who align with their pro-Israel stance. For example, in 2022, AIPAC-backed PACs spent $350,000 on a challenger against Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has been critical of Israel’s actions in the Middle East.

The increased visibility of AIPAC underscores the influence of the pro-Israel lobby in American politics. Top recipients of AIPAC’s support include President Joe Biden, Sen. Mitch McConnell, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and Sen. Ted Cruz. As the Israel-Hamas conflict rages on, AIPAC’s role in shaping U.S. policy towards Israel will continue to be a topic of debate and scrutiny.
