A personal trainer reveals the two popular fitness supplements she avoids at all costs

Personal trainer Hayley Madigan, based in Portsmouth, UK, knows the importance of supplements in maintaining peak performance. However, not all supplements are created equal, and Madigan has some strong opinions on which ones she avoids.

With more than half of US adults taking supplements, the market is booming, set to reach $308 billion worldwide by 2028. But experts caution that getting essential nutrients from food should be the priority, with supplements like protein powders and creatine being beneficial for active individuals like Madigan.

Madigan, 34, shared with Business Insider her reasons for steering clear of certain supplements, including energy drinks and pre-workout supplements. She used to rely on pre-workout supplements for an energy boost before workouts, but found that the high caffeine content left her feeling anxious and fatigued once the effects wore off. Now, she opts for a morning coffee instead.

Similarly, Madigan avoids protein bars due to their artificial sweeteners, which caused digestive issues for her. Research suggests that ultra-processed foods like protein bars can contribute to various health problems, making whole foods a preferable choice.

Madigan’s experience highlights the importance of individualized approaches to supplementation, as everyone’s needs are different. While she considered taking a Vitamin B12 supplement due to her diet, a blood test revealed she had naturally high levels, negating the need for supplementation.

Ultimately, Madigan’s story serves as a reminder that when it comes to supplements, it’s essential to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional to determine what’s best for you.
