The latest Pew Research Center survey has revealed that more than 40% of Americans now view China as an enemy, marking a significant increase from just a quarter two years ago. This shift in perception represents the highest level of hostility towards China in five years, with only 6% of Americans considering the country a partner.
The survey also found that half of Americans see China as a competitor, highlighting the complex dynamics between the two global powers. The Biden administration is currently navigating these tensions, seeking to stabilize relations with China while also addressing key issues such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, Taiwan, and human rights.
Recent visits to China by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reflect the administration’s efforts to manage the competition with Beijing responsibly. However, President Joe Biden faces pressure to demonstrate toughness on China, particularly in light of the upcoming election.
The Pew report, based on a survey of 3,600 U.S. adults, indicates that limiting China’s power and influence is a top foreign policy priority for many Americans. Additionally, the majority of respondents hold unfavorable views of China, with President Xi Jinping receiving similarly negative ratings.
Factors contributing to this negative perception include the U.S.-China trade war, the origins of COVID-19 in China, Beijing’s human rights record, and its policies towards Taiwan and Hong Kong. Overall, American attitudes towards China have become increasingly critical in recent years.
The survey also revealed that Republicans and older Americans are more likely to view China as an enemy, reflecting partisan divides on the issue. Economic concerns and perceptions of China’s influence on the U.S. economy also play a role in shaping attitudes towards the country.
As tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate, the Pew survey provides valuable insights into the shifting perceptions and priorities of the American public.
