Charles Shay, a 99-year-old veteran of D-Day, continues to spread a message of peace as the 80th anniversary of the historic landings in Normandy approaches. Shay, a Penobscot tribe citizen from Maine, was just 19 years old when he landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944.

Recalling the harrowing experience on Omaha Beach, Shay remembers the chaos and devastation surrounding him. Despite the danger, he focused on his mission to save as many wounded soldiers as possible. Shay received the Silver Star for his bravery in rescuing critically wounded soldiers from drowning in the sea.

Although Shay was able to save many lives, he tragically lost his good friend, Private Edward Morozewicz, on that fateful day. The memories of the war and the loss of close friends still weigh heavily on Shay’s heart.

After World War II, Shay continued to serve in the military, including during the Korean War. He later worked at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Austria. Despite the passage of over 60 years without speaking about his WWII experiences, Shay now actively shares his story at D-Day commemorations.

In 2018, Shay moved to Normandy, where he resides near the shores of Omaha Beach. Today, the Charles Shay Memorial on Omaha Beach honors the 175 Native Americans who landed there on D-Day.

As Shay reflects on the ongoing conflicts in the world, he expresses a deep sadness at the prevalence of wars. Despite the challenges, he remains hopeful for a future of peace and restoration.
