Abha Khatua Breaks National Record in Shot Put, Wins Gold at National Federation Athletics Meet

In a stunning display of strength and skill, Abha Khatua shattered Manpreet Kaur’s two-year-old National record in shot put with a throw of 18.41m at the National Federation athletics meet held at the Kalinga Stadium. The 28-year-old athlete from Maharashtra claimed the women’s shot put gold medal with this remarkable feat.

Abha, who missed out on a spot in the Indian team for the Hangzhou Asian Games, showcased her determination and talent as she surpassed the previous National mark in her fifth attempt. Having shifted from West Bengal to Maharashtra in 2019 and switching from glide to rotation technique in 2022, Abha’s hard work and dedication paid off with this outstanding performance.

“I think I can achieve the Olympic qualifying mark of 18.80m,” said Abha, expressing her confidence in her abilities and potential for further success.

In other events, Animesh Kujur of Odisha set a personal best of 20.62 in the men’s 200m, while Unnathi Aiyappa secured the women’s 200m crown with a time of 23.85. Nayana James emerged victorious in the women’s long jump, and Nithya Ramraj clinched the top honor in the women’s 100m hurdles.
