Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Special Olympics UAE Games kicked off with a bang at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on Friday, drawing athletes, parents, and supporters from all over the country. The opening ceremony was a vibrant display of inclusion, determination, and the unifying power of sports.

The event commenced with a lively parade led by a marching band, followed by hundreds of athletes and their coaches marching proudly through the halls of the exhibition centre. Each participant carried a sign representing their respective teams, showcasing the diversity and spirit of the Games.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan, President of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, graced the occasion with his presence, adding to the significance of the event. The Games, scheduled to run until Monday, June 10, will feature over 600 athletes competing in various sports including bowling, badminton, basketball, football, powerlifting, and e-sports.

Talal Al Hashemi, National Director of Special Olympics UAE, expressed his admiration for the athletes, stating, “These remarkable athletes personify resilience, they continue to inspire us all.” The primary goal of the Games is to empower individuals with determination, promote inclusion, and provide essential health checks for the participants.

Health screenings covering areas such as feet and hearing health, oral and dental health, mental health, and eye checks will be available to all athletes. A team of over 160 doctors and medical volunteers from across the country will manage these screenings, ensuring the well-being of all participants.

Furthermore, doctors from the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Algeria will participate in a unified healthcare training session in collaboration with Special Olympics Mena. The Games will also recognize winners of the Local Golisano Health Leadership Award, honoring organizations that contribute to inclusive and compassionate healthcare.

Talal Al Hashemi emphasized the importance of the Games in promoting inclusion and unity, stating, “Through their participation in the Special Olympics UAE Games, we encourage them to develop their skills, build lasting friendships, and celebrate the success of their dedication and teamwork.” He also highlighted the efforts of the Special Olympics UAE team in establishing the nation as a global leader in empowering individuals with determination.

The history of Special Olympics UAE dates back to October 2017 when it was established as an independent organization under the guidance of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. With Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed as honorary president and Shamma Al Mazrui, Minister of Community Development, as chairwoman of the board of trustees, the organization aims to empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through sports and leadership opportunities.

Special Olympics UAE has launched various community programs focused on families and young athletes, aiming to create a more inclusive society for individuals with disabilities. The organization received international recognition from the International Special Olympics Foundation-USA in December 2017, solidifying its commitment to empowering individuals with determination.

As the Special Olympics UAE Games continue to unfold, the spirit of unity, resilience, and inclusion shines brightly, inspiring all who witness the remarkable achievements of these extraordinary athletes.
