Abu Dhabi Police Warns Against Distracted Driving

Abu Dhabi Police have issued a stern warning to motorists about the dangers of distracted driving. In a 44-second video clip shared on their social media channels, the police highlighted the risks of using mobile phones while behind the wheel, showcasing scenarios where vehicles collided due to driver distraction.

The Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols emphasized the importance of staying focused on the road and avoiding activities such as browsing the internet, making calls, or taking pictures while driving. Violating these rules can result in a Dh800 fine and four traffic points.

To further educate drivers, Abu Dhabi Police listed the top 10 most dangerous driving practices to avoid:

1. Using mobile phones while driving: This can reduce reaction time by 35%, even with hands-free devices. In the UAE, using a mobile phone while driving can lead to a Dh400 fine and four black points.

2. Driving under the influence of drugs: Consuming prohibited substances impairs vision and concentration, leading to hefty fines, imprisonment, and vehicle confiscation in the UAE.

3. Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit hinders control of the vehicle and is a major cause of accidents globally. Violators face a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points, and vehicle impoundment for 60 days.

4. Not wearing seatbelts: All passengers must wear seatbelts, and children up to four years old require a child safety seat. Violators face a Dh400 fine and four black points.

5. Reckless driving: Careless behavior can endanger lives and property, resulting in a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points, and vehicle impoundment.

6. Not maintaining a safe distance: Drivers must maintain a safe following distance to prevent collisions. Failure to do so incurs a Dh400 fine and four black points.

7. Eating while driving: Eating can cause distractions and should be avoided while driving.

8. Not maintaining lane discipline: Changing lanes without signaling or driving slowly in the fast lane can result in fines and black points.

9. Ignoring traffic signals: Running red lights can lead to serious accidents and a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and vehicle impoundment.

10. Playing loud music: High volume can distract drivers from their surroundings, potentially causing accidents.

In addition to these driving mistakes, the condition of the vehicle also plays a crucial role in road safety. Regular maintenance checks are essential to ensure the proper functioning of brakes, engine, tires, and other safety features.

Abu Dhabi Police have installed various traffic radars across the UAE to monitor road safety effectively. It is imperative for drivers to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent accidents and legal consequences. Remember, safety on the road is a shared responsibility, and every driver plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of themselves and others. Stay focused, stay safe.
