Achieving Success through the Small Business Development Center

Stony Brook University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) recently wrapped up a successful three-week program aimed at empowering Latino entrepreneurs in the construction industry. The program, titled “Build Your Success,” provided tailored guidance and support to minority business owners looking to thrive in New York’s bustling construction market.

Hosted at the Brentwood Public Library and supported by M&T Bank, the program saw forty participants from diverse backgrounds come together to learn about crucial aspects of running a construction business. From labor laws to insurance requirements and accessing government contracts, attendees gained valuable insights from nine business experts and engaged in interactive exercises to solidify their knowledge.

This initiative is part of SBDC’s ongoing efforts to support the Latino entrepreneurial community on Long Island. By providing programs in Spanish, SBDC aims to equip business owners with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s competitive business landscape.

Led by SBDC business advisor Jacqueline Franco and supported by director Bernard Ryba and the SBDC team, the “Build Your Success” program marks a significant step in supporting local entrepreneurship. Peter Donnelly, associate vice president for Technology Partnerships at Stony Brook University, emphasizes the importance of such initiatives in fostering economic growth and opportunity in the community.
