Kansas junior KJ Adams was awarded the Danny Manning “Mr. Jayhawk” Award at the Jayhawks’ season-ending banquet, marking a significant achievement following a challenging year. Adams, who did not miss a game during the 2023-24 season and started all but two, averaged 12.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while playing a new position outside the paint. This feat was made even more impressive by the fact that Adams lost his mother to cancer midway through the nonconference schedule.

Head coach Bill Self praised Adams for his resilience and ability to stay focused despite personal tragedy, calling him “as improved a player as there was in our league this year.” Adams expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that it meant a lot to him to hear such positive feedback from his coach and teammates.

Self acknowledged that other players like Hunter Dickinson or Dajuan Harris Jr. could have been contenders for the award, but Adams’ ability to persevere through adversity with grace set him apart. Adams, a native of Austin, Texas, confirmed that he will return for another collegiate season at KU, emphasizing his commitment to the team.

Reflecting on the Jayhawks’ second-round loss in the NCAA tournament, Adams expressed determination to use the disappointment as motivation for the upcoming season. He believes that the team has a chip on their shoulder and is eager to prove themselves on the court.
