Administrator Samantha Power Announces New Initiatives for Morocco During Visit

The United States, through USAID, has announced multiple new partnerships in Morocco aimed at advancing inclusive climate action, food security, and youth empowerment. Administrator Samantha Power, wrapping up a four-day visit, highlighted several new programs and initiatives that build on the longstanding partnership between USAID and Morocco.

One of the key partnerships launched by Administrator Power is with the Rabita Mohammedia League of Scholars and International Organization for Migration. This local partnership focuses on empowering youth and supporting the Government of Morocco’s efforts to address challenges faced by young Moroccans, such as limited access to quality education, high unemployment rates, and disenfranchisement. The partnership aims to engage youth in various opportunities, from sports clubs to vocational training.

Additionally, a new partnership was announced with the OCP Group, a Moroccan fertilizer producer, to address food insecurity across Africa. OCP will invest $30 million, using USAID’s Space to Place approach, to support efficient fertilizer use in sub-Saharan Africa. This collaboration builds on USAID’s $40 million investment in Space to Place announced at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit in Nairobi.

Furthermore, USAID unveiled a partnership with Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and GiveDirectly to launch the first component of a new climate program in Morocco. The Cooperative Resilience Program, funded by USAID, UM6P, and GiveDirectly, will provide financing, training, and coaching to vulnerable Moroccan cooperatives and entrepreneurs to help them adapt to the impacts of climate change, particularly in rural areas.

These partnerships underscore the commitment of USAID and its partners to addressing critical issues in Morocco and across Africa, while empowering local communities and fostering sustainable development.
