Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell experienced a rollercoaster ride during the 2024 NFL Draft, going from a projected first-round pick to falling to the second round before being selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 52nd overall pick.
Mitchell, known for his blazing speed, was expected to be off the board much earlier in the draft, with many experts pegging him as a late first-round selection. However, he ended up being the 11th wide receiver taken in the draft.
Expressing his disappointment in not being a first-round pick, Mitchell told Colts reporters, “I’m just kind of pissed.” Despite his initial frustration, he expressed gratitude to the Colts and his readiness to get to work.
The talented receiver transferred to Texas after two seasons at Georgia and made a significant impact in his lone season with the Longhorns. Mitchell showcased his speed and playmaking ability, recording 845 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
During the pre-draft process, Mitchell impressed scouts with his athleticism, running a 4.34 40-yard dash and posting an 11-foot, 4-inch broad jump. Despite some concerns about his discipline and effort, he was still regarded as a high-upside prospect.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard vehemently defended Mitchell against anonymous reports criticizing his character, labeling them as “bulls***.” Ballard expressed his confidence in Mitchell’s character and talent, emphasizing that he is a “good kid.”
Mitchell now joins a talented offensive core in Indianapolis, where he will have the opportunity to make an impact alongside standout players like Anthony Richardson, Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., and Josh Downs. With a supportive GM and a promising team, Mitchell has found a fitting landing spot to begin his NFL career.
