ADP Report Shows Small Businesses Added 38,000 Jobs Across the Nation in April

Private sector employment saw a significant increase of 192,000 jobs in April, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report. However, the information sector experienced a decrease in jobs during the same period.

The majority of job gains were concentrated in the South, with a total of 124,000 new jobs added in the region. The report also highlighted that hiring has been on the rise over the past three months, with small businesses leading the way by adding 38,000 jobs. Interestingly, companies with 1-19 employees gained 39,000 jobs, while those with 20-49 employees saw a decrease of 1,000 jobs.

In the Leisure and Hospitality industries, there was a notable increase of 56,000 jobs, indicating a positive trend in the sector. However, the information sector, which includes telecommunications, media, and information technology, saw a decrease of 4,000 jobs.

Chief economist at ADP, Nela Richardson, pointed out that hiring was broad-based in April, with the exception of the information sector. She noted that this sector showed weakness, with job losses and the slowest pace of pay gains since August 2021.

The report also highlighted some reasons for the decrease in jobs in the information sector, including skills mismatch and the impact of AI and automation. As technology continues to evolve, the demand for specific skills changes, leaving some professionals unqualified for the available jobs.
