Africa’s Travel Indaba Set to Inject R1.2 Billion into South Africa’s Economy

The upcoming Africa’s Travel Indaba, scheduled to take place in Durban next month, is expected to be a major boost for South Africa’s economy. The trade show, which showcases Africa’s travel and leisure tourism products and services, is forecasted to generate at least R1.2 billion in revenue for local businesses.

Last year’s event generated R408.6 million in revenue directly to the local economy and a further R776.4 million in indirect or induced revenue, according to a post-event survey. Deputy Tourism Minister Fish Mahlalela expressed confidence that this year’s event will match or surpass these figures.

With 990 confirmed exhibitors from 26 African countries and more than 1,000 buyers representing 36 countries, the event is set to be a hub for networking and business opportunities in the tourism sector. Additionally, 120 small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) will be funded by the department to exhibit at the trade show.

The event is not only expected to boost the economy but also create jobs, with 2,296 jobs sustained from last year’s event. Strategic partnerships in the aviation and hospitality sectors have also contributed to the growth of the tourism industry, with new routes and direct flights being established.

Overall, Africa’s Travel Indaba is seen as a crucial platform for showcasing the continent’s tourism offerings and driving economic growth in South Africa. With projections of increased international visitors to KwaZulu-Natal, the event is set to play a significant role in the recovery and expansion of the tourism sector in the region.
