After 23 seasons as the head coach of the Wabasso girls basketball program, Neil Dolan has decided to step down, marking the end of a historic run for the Rabbits. Dolan, who finishes with a 392-206 overall record, made the difficult decision following the team’s 7-20 season.
Throughout his tenure, Dolan led the team to seven conference championships, including a state title in 2004. Despite the focus on winning, Dolan always prioritized teaching his players important life lessons, emphasizing faith, family, school, and then sport.
Dolan’s coaching style and dedication to his players did not go unnoticed, as Wabasso Activities Director Joe Kemp praised him for changing girls basketball in the area with his competitive spirit and innovative strategies. Dolan’s impact extended beyond the court, as he formed lasting relationships with his players and their families.
Reflecting on his coaching career, Dolan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach at Wabasso and the support of his wife and children. At 60 years old, Dolan leaves the door open for a potential return to coaching in the future.
As the Wabasso community bids farewell to a coaching legend, Dolan’s legacy of mentorship, leadership, and dedication to his players will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
