Aggie women’s tennis team continues to thrive in the season

Texas A&M women’s tennis team made history on Friday with a stunning 4-1 victory over defending national champions North Carolina in the NCAA tournament super regionals. The Aggies ended North Carolina’s impressive 94-match home winning streak at the Chewning Tennis Center, proving that they can compete with the best in the country.

The 13th-seeded Aggies (25-7) started strong by winning the doubles point, with Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres defeating the sixth-ranked duo of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig. In singles, A&M’s top three lines secured the victory with Carson Branstine, Nicole Khirin, and Stoiana all claiming crucial wins.

Coach Mark Weaver described the win as one of the biggest in Texas A&M history, highlighting the team’s remarkable achievement in defeating the defending champions on their home court. This victory marks the Aggies’ third consecutive Elite 8 appearance, showcasing their consistency and determination in the tournament.

Looking ahead, Texas A&M will face either fifth-seeded Virginia or Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals on May 17 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Despite a slow start to the season, the Aggies have found their rhythm and are confident in their abilities moving forward.
