AI Health Coach Lowers Blood Pressure and Boosts Engagement in Patients With Hypertension
In a groundbreaking study published in JMIR Cardio, researchers have found that a fully digital, artificial intelligence (AI)–driven lifestyle coaching program can effectively reduce blood pressure in adults with hypertension. This innovative program utilizes data from wearable activity trackers, blood pressure monitors, and a mobile app questionnaire to provide personalized lifestyle guidance to participants. Led by Jared Leitner from the University of California, San Diego, the research team demonstrated the effectiveness of this AI-based intervention in managing hypertension and improving patient engagement.
The study, which involved 141 participants with stage 2 hypertension, utilized a single-arm nonrandomized trial to evaluate the impact of the AI-driven lifestyle coaching program. Over a period of 24 weeks, participants received personalized guidance through SMS text messages and a mobile app, resulting in significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. At the 12-week mark, systolic blood pressure decreased by an average of 9.6 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 5.7 mm Hg. By the end of the 24-week intervention, these reductions had further improved, with systolic blood pressure dropping by 14.2 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 8.1 mm Hg.
One of the key findings of the study was the increase in participants achieving blood pressure control and the decrease in the number of participants with stage 2 hypertension. Moreover, the researchers noted high levels of participant engagement with the program, reducing the need for manual clinician outreach. This suggests that the AI-driven approach not only improves blood pressure control but also streamlines the workload for healthcare providers.
Dr. Leitner emphasized the significance of the study’s results, stating, “By identifying the key lifestyle factors contributing to patients’ hypertension and offering precise guidance, the AI-powered lifestyle coaching program maintained high levels of patient engagement, leading to improved outcomes. This study showcases how an AI-based approach to hypertension management can enhance scalability and accessibility to effective blood pressure control.”
