AI technology in Northamptonshire detects drivers using mobile phones

Northamptonshire Police have revealed the shocking results of a one-week trial using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to catch motorists breaking phone and seatbelt laws. The trial identified 114 drivers using mobile phones and 180 not wearing seatbelts, highlighting the prevalence of these dangerous behaviors on the roads.

The AI technology analyzes images taken by roadside cameras and alerts police to potential offenses, providing an additional tool for law enforcement to improve road safety. Despite laws prohibiting the use of mobile phones while driving since 2003, many drivers continue to engage in this risky behavior.

Matthew O’Connell, Northamptonshire Police’s safer roads team manager, expressed disappointment at the widespread nature of these offenses, despite ongoing educational efforts to promote road safety. He emphasized the importance of using technology like AI to enhance enforcement efforts and hold drivers accountable for their actions.

While the AI technology has proven effective in identifying offenders, the AA has cautioned against relying too heavily on this technology. Jack Cousens, head of road safety at the AA, stressed the importance of having traffic officers on the roads to intervene and prevent dangerous driving behaviors before accidents occur.

The trial in Northamptonshire may have ended, but 10 police forces, including Norfolk and Thames Valley, are set to participate in similar initiatives before March 2025. This collaborative effort aims to leverage technology and enforcement strategies to make roads safer for all motorists.
