Doctors are on the brink of revolutionizing the way burns patients are treated, thanks to a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) system that can quickly determine the need for surgery to prevent permanent scarring.
Traditionally, doctors have had to rely on hospital scanning machines, which often come with long waiting times, to assess the severity of burns. However, a new technology called DeepView is changing the game by providing a rapid assessment in less than 30 seconds.
The DeepView system utilizes a specially designed camera attached to a computer with an AI program that can accurately identify irreversibly damaged skin with a success rate of nine out of ten times. This means that patients no longer have to wait days for a decision on whether they require a skin graft.
With around 175,000 people in the UK hospitalized with burn injuries each year, and approximately 1,000 of them needing skin grafts, the DeepView technology has the potential to significantly reduce patient wait times and improve outcomes.
Presented at the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons’ North East Meeting in Newcastle, the DeepView system has been praised by experts for its ability to quickly and accurately assess the severity of burns. According to burns specialist Mr. Chris Lewis, this technology is a gamechanger that will provide patients with faster answers and more precise treatment options.
