Air France KLM increases flight capacity to North Africa in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Air France KLM, one of the leading airline groups in Europe, is facing challenges in the wake of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. The CEO, Ben Smith, revealed that the demand for leisure travel to Egypt and Jordan has significantly decreased since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. As a result, the airline has been forced to redeploy a large portion of its capacity to North Africa.

Smith expressed cautious optimism during a call with analysts, stating that he believes demand for flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut will eventually recover. However, he noted that the situation in southern Egypt and Jordan is still far from returning to pre-October levels. This shift in demand has prompted the airline to redirect resources to other markets, particularly in Northern African countries such as Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.

The impact of the conflict on global travel demand has been significant, with airlines suspending hundreds of flights to and from Tel Aviv, as well as some to Lebanon and Jordan. The ongoing geopolitical disruptions across Asia and the Middle East have also led to changes in flight routes, cancellations, and diversions, further affecting the industry.

In the first quarter of the year, Air France KLM reported a 6.9% decrease in yields, reflecting the challenges faced by the group due to the capacity increase and disruptions in the region. Despite these setbacks, Smith remains hopeful that the situation will improve over time.

“We are cautiously optimistic that Tel Aviv and Beirut will come back to the levels that they were at prior to October. It’s a bit different in the leisure markets of Southern Egypt and in Jordan, which are still not back, not close to where we were before October,” Smith said.

The airline industry continues to navigate through uncertain times, with ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions impacting travel demand and operations. Air France KLM’s decision to redeploy capacity to more stable markets in North Africa highlights the need for flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing circumstances.

As the situation evolves, airlines will need to closely monitor developments and adjust their strategies to ensure the sustainability of their operations. The challenges faced by Air France KLM serve as a reminder of the complexities of the aviation industry and the importance of resilience in times of crisis.
