Akshay Dhere stages a comeback to defeat Parmod Kumar in the 57kg final of the Federation Cup

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, young wrestler Akshay Dhere emerged victorious in the 57kg final at the Federation Cup, securing his first elite title in a nail-biting match against Parmod Kumar. Dhere, a National junior bronze medallist in 2022, showcased his prowess on the mat as he rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to level the score at 4-4 in the first period.

With a swift double-leg attack and leg lace, the 21-year-old Armyman from Kolhapur surged ahead to 8-4, eventually pinning Parmod with two minutes remaining in the match. The crowd at the Maharaja Vibhuti Narain Indoor Stadium was on their feet as Dhere clinched the victory in a display of skill and determination.

In another intense final bout, National silver medallist Sahil Kundu (61kg) staged a remarkable comeback from a 2-4 deficit to defeat Amit 17-7 in a high-scoring match. The day also saw the election of seven out of eight candidates to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Athletes Commission, with Narsingh Yadav being elected as the chairman.

The Federation Cup showcased the best of Indian wrestling talent, with athletes competing fiercely in various weight categories. The medallists in the men’s freestyle division included standout performers like Sahil Kundu, Atul, Shubham, and Omkar Chaugule, who displayed exceptional skill and determination on the mat.
