Al-Jubeir announces Saudi Arabia’s $2.5 billion grant to Middle East Green Initiative secretariat

Saudi Arabia is taking significant steps towards preserving the environment and combating climate change, as highlighted by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir. The Kingdom has allocated a generous grant of $2.5 billion to the secretariat of the Middle East Green Initiative, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the first edition of the National Afforestation Forum in Riyadh, Al-Jubeir emphasized the importance of afforestation in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to address climate change and achieve the goals set out in Vision 2030. The forum brought together a diverse group of Saudi, regional, and international experts in the environmental field to discuss the Kingdom’s initiatives in combating desertification and promoting vegetation development.

Al-Jubeir highlighted the leadership role of Saudi Arabia in the region through initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. These initiatives aim to share the Kingdom’s expertise in circular carbon economy, desertification control, land rehabilitation, and tree planting to reduce carbon emissions in the region.

The Middle East Green Initiative has already garnered participation from several countries in the region, with more expressing interest in joining the largest initiative of its kind in the world. Al-Jubeir underscored Saudi Arabia’s responsibility as the world’s largest oil exporter to lead by example in addressing climate change and shaping international standards.

Afforestation and land rehabilitation were highlighted as crucial strategies in mitigating climate change and enhancing quality of life. Al-Jubeir emphasized that these efforts not only have environmental and climatic benefits but also contribute to security and stability. Drought and environmental degradation can lead to conflicts and population displacement, posing challenges that contradict Saudi Arabia’s commitment to regional security.

The minister also emphasized the economic implications of climate change, noting that disasters and floods resulting from environmental degradation can disrupt supply chains, increase commodity prices, and impact transportation costs. These factors ultimately affect consumers and the overall economy, underscoring the interconnectedness of climate, environment, and economic stability.

Al-Jubeir’s remarks underscore Saudi Arabia’s holistic approach to addressing climate change, recognizing the multifaceted impacts of environmental degradation on society, economy, and security.
