The Alabama House of Representatives made history on Tuesday by passing a record-breaking education budget package totaling over $11 billion. This budget allocation covers k-12 schools, two-year colleges, specialty schools, state four-year colleges and universities, and other state agencies.

State Rep. Danny Garrett, who chairs the House Ways and Means Education Committee, played a significant role in carrying most of the bills in the education budget package. Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter expressed pride in the passage of this historic budget, emphasizing the critical investments made in the K-12 system, teacher pay increases, and funding for essential programs like reading coaches and mental health coordinators.

One of the key bills in the package, House Bill 147, focused on a supplemental appropriation from the Advancement in Technology Fund. This fund, which had excess funds due to the absence of proration in the 2024 budget, received additional funding proposed by Garrett.

The education budget package also included provisions for a residential high school in Demopolis for students interested in healthcare careers, as well as appropriations for various educational institutions like Tuskegee University and Talladega College.

The passage of these bills in the Alabama House of Representatives marks a significant investment in the state’s education system, setting the stage for continued progress and success in the future. The bills will now move to the Senate for further consideration.
