Alliance DAO sees decrease in US founders interest due to crypto regulations

The latest batch of graduates from Alliance DAO, a stage-agnostic crypto accelerator, has been unveiled amidst a backdrop of excitement in the recovering market. With Bitcoin hitting all-time highs just two months ago and venture investors pouring money into web3 startups, the crypto space is buzzing with activity.

However, regulatory efforts to rein in the industry are still ongoing. Binance’s founder, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, is facing imprisonment, and Uniswap received a notice from the SEC. Despite these challenges, the enthusiasm among web3 believers remains high, as evidenced by the catchphrases like “we are so back” circulating on crypto Twitter.

One interesting trend emerging from Alliance DAO’s latest cohort is the shifting geographic composition. Founders based in North America accounted for 45% of applicants in the second half of 2021, but that share has dropped to just 26% in the first half of this year. This decline is likely due to regulatory concerns and the emergence of more favorable crypto environments in emerging markets.

The accelerator has seen a rise in interest from Asia, with 24% of all applications coming from the region in the first half of 2024, compared to 14% in the second half of 2021. The latest cohort of Alliance DAO includes 21 teams working on projects ranging from decentralized AI to crypto-based payment solutions. Projects building on Ethereum remain a focus, but other ecosystems like Solana and Bitcoin are also gaining traction. These startups are addressing various challenges in the crypto space, from real estate investing to cross-border payments, showcasing the diversity and innovation within the industry.
