Allison Hanes: Bonspiel’s Dedication to Nurturing Mohawk Language is a Labor of Love

Steve Bonspiel’s Sharing Our Stories project has made significant strides since becoming a non-profit a year ago. The project, aimed at revitalizing the Kanien’kéha language and preserving the wisdom of Mohawk elders, has expanded to include a website, a staff of nine, syndication in another newspaper, and upcoming airtime on a local radio station.

Founder Steve Bonspiel has ambitious plans for the project, including the creation of audio and video content, TikTok shorts, books, a new office, and expansion to other Mohawk communities. However, the financial aspect of the project remains a constant challenge.

Bonspiel shared his initial fears about starting the project due to financial constraints, but his determination and belief in the importance of the project kept him going. Despite the challenges, Bonspiel is committed to finding ways to fund the project and make it sustainable.

The project relies on grants, fundraising events, and partnerships with other organizations to raise funds. Bonspiel emphasized the importance of community support and the positive impact Sharing Our Stories has had on individuals, families, and the broader community.

The project’s success has inspired Bonspiel to explore opportunities to expand the project to other Mohawk communities and share the template with others interested in language revitalization efforts. Despite the challenges and historical stigma surrounding the Kanien’kéha language, Bonspiel remains dedicated to preserving and promoting it for future generations.
