Alumni in Teaching from University of Maryland’s School of Education Receive $1,000 Reward

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a heartwarming gesture to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, the University of Maryland’s School of Education surprised three deserving alumni with a $1,000 check each. Jeimy Amaya, Pedro Gonzalez, and Alexis Cutler were the lucky recipients of this unexpected gift.

Cutler, a “Teacher of the Year” candidate at Tyler Heights Elementary School, was greeted with the UMD fight song, balloons, and a gift basket in the middle of her class. Overwhelmed with emotion, she exclaimed, “This is the best interruption of class ever honestly.” Her students, who adore her for allowing them to eat snacks, couldn’t contain their excitement for their favorite teacher.

On the other hand, Pedro Gonzalez of Samuel Ogle Middle School, known for his dislike of surprises, jokingly expressed his reluctance to cry in front of his students. Despite facing personal challenges like knee surgery, Gonzalez remains dedicated to his teaching profession. His students, showing their support with signs, cheered for him as he received the surprise gift.

UMD’s School of Education Dean Kimberly Griffin praised the educators for their generosity, thoughtfulness, and dedication to their students. Both Cutler and Gonzalez plan to use the money for classroom supplies and other necessities for their students.

This gesture not only recognizes the hard work and dedication of teachers but also highlights the impact they have on their students’ lives. Teacher appreciation should not be limited to just one week, but it is moments like these that remind us of the importance of celebrating and supporting educators year-round.
