Aman Sehrawat enters last Olympic Qualifying event in Istanbul with high hopes

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Indian wrestlers Aman Sehrawat and Deepak Punia are gearing up to secure men’s freestyle quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the World Qualifiers in Istanbul. With this being the last chance to qualify for the prestigious Games, the pressure is on for these talented athletes.

Aman, the U23 world champion, missed out on qualifying at the World Championships and Asian Qualifiers in Bishkek. Meanwhile, Deepak and Sujeet Kalkal faced challenges reaching Bishkek due to a storm in Dubai. Now, all eyes are on Istanbul, where the top two finalists in each category will earn quotas, with a third quota going to the winner of the bout between the two bronze medallists.

The absence of national camps and competitions due to protests has impacted the wrestlers’ preparations. Coach Praveen Dahiya emphasized the importance of endurance and strategy in securing victories on the mat. Aman’s performance will not only determine his fate but also that of Tokyo Games silver medallist Ravi Dahiya, who could potentially compete in Paris if Aman secures the 57kg quota.

Other Indian wrestlers like Jaidep, Deepak, and Sumit Malik also have one last shot at qualifying in the men’s freestyle categories. With four quotas already secured by women wrestlers, the Indian contingent is hopeful for more success in Istanbul.

As the competition heats up, the Indian wrestlers are determined to overcome challenges and make their mark on the international stage. The road to Paris is paved with obstacles, but these athletes are ready to fight for their chance at Olympic glory.
