After more than two years of anticipation, the Amazon Fresh store in Poway remains closed, much to the disappointment of residents eagerly awaiting its opening. The building in Twin Peaks Plaza near Target on Pomerado Road has been ready for occupancy since early 2022, according to a city of Poway Facebook post.

Despite the city signing off on a certificate of occupancy for the grocery store, the doors remain locked, leaving many wondering about the delay. Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch revealed that the company is undergoing updates to its Amazon Fresh stores, including replacing the original Just Walk Out technology with the Amazon Dash Cart, a smart shopping cart.

The decision to switch technologies was based on customer feedback, with shoppers wanting more convenience and value during their shopping experience. The Dash Cart allows customers to scan items, track their spending in real-time, and skip the checkout line altogether.

While some residents like Bernadine Splettstoeszer are frustrated by the prolonged closure, others like Darin Triplett are mystified by the situation. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized the importance of a physical presence to meet the company’s grocery needs, hinting at the potential for expansion once the new store format proves successful.

As the community eagerly awaits the opening of the Amazon Fresh store in Poway, it remains to be seen when the doors will finally unlock and shoppers can experience the innovative shopping technology firsthand.
