American soldier detained in Russia for alleged criminal behavior | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

An American soldier was detained in Russia last week on charges of “criminal misconduct,” the US Army confirmed on Monday. The soldier, a staff sergeant, was arrested in Vladivostok, Russia, on May 2, 2024, for suspected theft and is currently in pre-trial detention.

The soldier, who has not been identified by name, traveled to Russia on his own and was not on official business, according to NBC News. This incident adds to the number of Americans held in Russia, including Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal who has been detained on espionage charges for over a year.

The US Army spokeswoman, Cynthia Smith, stated that Russia notified the US State Department about the soldier’s detention and that appropriate consular support is being provided. The soldier’s family has also been informed of the situation.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, acknowledged the case but did not provide further details due to the sensitivity of the matter. The US government, along with the soldier’s employer, denies the charges against Gershkovich and continues to advocate for his release.

The soldier’s detention comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Russia, particularly in light of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The situation remains ongoing, with efforts being made to ensure the soldier’s well-being and legal rights are upheld during the legal process in Russia.
