Americans Crave Outdoor Time More Than Ever Before, New Research Shows

A recent study conducted by Talker Research on behalf of RVshare has revealed some interesting insights into the importance of spending time outdoors for mental and physical well-being. The survey of 2,000 U.S. adults found that on average, people need to spend 67 minutes outside each day in order to feel refreshed.

The research showed that over half of Americans (57%) are craving time spent outdoors more now than ever before. Those who spent time outside reported feeling relaxed (68%), in a better mood (66%), and with a clearer head (64%). On the other hand, spending more time inside than preferred can lead to feelings of depression (38%), anxiousness (33%), and loneliness (32%).

The study also found that negative emotions can arise when outdoor plans get derailed due to cancellations or bad weather. Forty-eight percent of respondents reported feeling disappointed when their outdoor plans change, while others feel frustrated (32%) and annoyed (28%).

RVshare’s CEO Jon Gray emphasized the importance of outdoor experiences for overall well-being, stating, “From enhanced mood to feelings of relaxation and well-being, there are so many physical and mental benefits that come from breaking through the four walls and exploring open-air adventures and activities.”

Respondents shared their favorite outdoor activities, with many citing benefits to their mental and physical health. Some of these activities include grilling or cooking outside (23%), hiking (14%), and camping (11%). The COVID-19 pandemic has also influenced travel preferences, with Americans opting for trips to places in nature (16%) and focusing on trips that benefit their mental health (15%).

The survey revealed that 67% of Americans view travel as a method of self-care, with 42% feeling the need to book a trip to “escape” at least once every six months. One-third of Americans (33%) regularly book vacations around outdoor activities they enjoy, with trips to the beach (44%), national park visits (29%), and cross-country driving (12%) being popular choices.

Interestingly, over half of respondents (57%) prefer to drive to their destination while on vacation compared to flying at 25%. This preference could be attributed to the belief that the journey to a destination is part of the vacation experience, a sentiment shared by 83% of respondents.

Overall, outdoor trips are having a positive impact on American lives, with 83% of survey respondents reporting benefits to their mental health such as reduced stress (36%), mental recharging (33%), and increased gratitude (23%).

RVshare’s CEO Gray highlighted the mental and physical benefits of spending time outdoors, stating, “Whether soaking up the sun, hiking a new trail, or gazing up at the starry sky, we’ve all experienced the invaluable renewal, mental clarity, and freeness that comes from being outdoors.”

The survey methodology involved a random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 Americans commissioned by RVshare between April 18 and April 23, 2024. The study was conducted by Talker Research, a market research company with members of the Market Research Society (MRS) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

In conclusion, the research highlights the importance of incorporating outdoor time into daily routines and travel plans for overall well-being and mental health. As Americans continue to prioritize outdoor experiences, the benefits to their physical and mental health are clear.
