Preston Spradlin Named New Head Coach for JMU Men’s Basketball

Last week, JMU men’s basketball made a significant coaching change by naming Preston Spradlin as their new head coach. Spradlin, who previously found success at Morehead State, brings a different style of play to Harrisonburg compared to his predecessor, Mark Byington.

During his time at Morehead State, Spradlin led his team to 20+ wins in each of the last four seasons and secured two NCAA Tournament appearances. His teams are known for their deliberate offensive pace and focus on elite-level defense, setting them apart from Byington’s coaching style.

In terms of compensation, Spradlin’s memorandum of understanding outlines a base salary of $453,900, supplemented by an additional $146,100 annually from private donors, totaling a minimum of $600,000 per year. The six-year contract is set to run through April 24, 2030.

Additionally, JMU will pay a $275,000 buyout to Morehead State for bringing Spradlin on board, while Vanderbilt will pay JMU $1 million to retain Byington’s coaching services.

Spradlin’s bonus structure offers various incentives for achieving milestones such as top RPI rankings, conference finishes, NCAA Tournament bids, and postseason success. With opportunities to earn bonuses for coaching achievements and team performance, Spradlin has the potential to significantly increase his earnings based on the team’s success.

As JMU looks ahead to the upcoming seasons under Spradlin’s leadership, fans can expect an exciting new era for the men’s basketball program with a coach who brings a proven track record of success and a fresh approach to the game.
