Andreescu Among Six Canadians Competing at French Open

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu is set to make her highly anticipated return to the court at the French Open after a nine-month hiatus. She will be joined by four other Canadians in the main draw at Roland-Garros, including Leylah Annie Fernandez, Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov, and Gabriel Diallo.

Andreescu’s first-round match will be against Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain, a tough opponent who reached the fourth round in Paris last year. The Canadian will face a challenging road ahead, with potential matchups against top-ranked players like Anna Kalinskaya and Jasmine Paolini.

Fernandez, who reached the quarter-finals at the French Open in 2022, will also be looking to make a strong showing this year. She will face Jessika Ponchet of France in the first round and could potentially meet top players like Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff in later rounds.

On the men’s side, Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov will be aiming to improve on their previous performances at Roland-Garros. Auger-Aliassime, who recently reached the final of the Mutua Madrid Open, will face Yoshihito Nishioka in the opening round, while Shapovalov will take on Luca Van Assche of France.

With a strong contingent of Canadian players competing at the French Open, all eyes will be on Andreescu as she makes her comeback on the clay courts of Roland-Garros. The main-draw action is set to begin on Sunday in Paris.
