Reading Time: 2 minutes

Archmere High School’s Andy Zhu made history by winning his fourth consecutive boys first singles title at the DIAA Tennis Tournament, becoming just the second player ever to achieve this feat. The pressure was on for Zhu, who admitted to feeling nervous and tight during the match, but he managed to overcome his nerves and secure a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Charter of Wilmington’s Ryan He.

Zhu’s win not only solidified his place in the record books but also capped off an impressive high school career with a perfect 61-0 record. He joins an elite group of players, including Wilmington Friends’ Brint Morrow, as the only boys to win four championships and remain undefeated since the state tournament format was introduced over 50 years ago.

The match was a hard-fought battle that lasted almost two hours, with Zhu ultimately emerging victorious and shouting in celebration as he fell to the court. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Zhu expressed relief and pride, stating that winning the title meant the world to him and was the biggest achievement of his life.

In the girls first singles final, Tower Hill’s Ava Emrich also emerged victorious, defeating Caesar Rodney’s Gracie Clark 6-2, 6-4. Emrich, who had been preparing diligently throughout the season, showcased her skills and determination to secure the title.

Overall, Tower Hill swept the team titles, with Rikhil Sanjeev winning the boys third singles title and Jack Allen and Samuel DeSantis clinching the first doubles championship. Archmere also had a strong showing, with Brianna Yang and Susan Shipley winning titles in the girls second and third singles, respectively.

As Zhu looks ahead to his future at Johns Hopkins University, he remains determined to continue his tennis career and achieve even greater success. His remarkable achievement at the DIAA Tennis Tournament serves as a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.
