Anne Hathaway Reveals Outdated ‘Make Out’ Audition Practices in Hollywood Casting

Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-winning actor, has recently spoken out about a disturbing practice she encountered early in her film career. Hathaway revealed that during the 2000s, casting directors would ask actors to engage in “make out” sessions with multiple potential co-stars to test for on-screen chemistry.

In an interview obtained by E! News, the 41-year-old actor expressed her discomfort with this outdated practice, stating, “It was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it.” Hathaway, known for her roles in ‘The Princess Diaries’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ described feeling uneasy about the situation and questioning if there was something wrong with her for not being excited about it.

Despite feeling pressured to comply with these requests, Hathaway now advocates for change in the industry. As a producer on her latest project, ‘The Idea of You,’ she made sure that such practices were left behind. The film, based on Robinne Lee’s novel, follows the romance between a 40-year-old art gallery owner, Solene (played by Hathaway), and Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the 24-year-old lead singer of a boy band.

Hathaway shared that when casting for the role opposite her, she didn’t need a kiss test to confirm Galitzine’s suitability. She recalled laughing when Galitzine walked in because he was “ridiculously perfect for the part.” Addressing rumors that Hayes Campbell was inspired by Harry Styles, Hathaway dismissed them and emphasized the originality of the character.

‘The Idea of You’ is set for release on May 2 this year, showcasing a refreshing approach to casting and chemistry testing in Hollywood.
