Another German politician targeted in escalating pre-European elections violence

The rise of far-right sentiment in Europe, particularly in Germany, has led to a disturbing trend of increased threats and violence against public figures and various groups. The latest victim of this alarming trend is Franziska Giffey, a prominent Berlin politician who was violently assaulted at an event in a Berlin library.

Giffey, the city’s top economic official and a former mayor, was attacked by a man who approached her from behind and hit her with a bag containing a hard device, causing injuries to her head and neck. She was taken to a hospital and treated for head and neck pain, while Berlin prosecutors have identified the alleged perpetrator.

The attack on Giffey is just one in a series of recent incidents targeting politicians in Germany. Last week, a candidate from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party was beaten up while campaigning in Dresden, and a Green Party worker was also attacked by the same group of suspects. Additionally, a 47-year-old Green politician was assaulted while putting up election posters in Dresden.

The escalating political violence has created a climate of fear in Germany, with both government and opposition parties calling for increased protection for politicians and election rallies. The German Parliament reported 2790 attacks on elected representatives in 2023, with members of The Greens and the far-right Alternative for Germany party being disproportionately affected.

In response to the growing threat of violence, Germany’s federal interior minister, Nancy Faeser, has proposed tightening criminal laws to punish anti-democratic acts more severely. With the upcoming European elections and regional elections in the fall, the country is bracing for further political tensions and potential gains by far-right parties like AfD, which campaigns against immigration and European integration.
