Anthony Smith addresses misunderstanding with Alex Pereira: ‘I have never issued any challenges’

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Anthony Smith is making headlines once again, this time for his ongoing back-and-forth with UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. The feud between the two fighters escalated recently when Pereira issued a $50,000 grappling challenge to Smith, which Smith accepted after his victory over Vitor Petrino at UFC 301.

In a recent interview on The MMA Hour, Smith clarified that he has never been the one to challenge Pereira, but rather, it has always been Pereira who brings up the idea of grappling. Smith emphasized that he is open to any form of competition with Pereira, whether it be fighting, boxing, kickboxing, or even playing video games like Halo on Xbox.

Despite the tension between them, Smith admitted that he found Pereira’s antics at UFC 301 amusing, particularly when Pereira pretended to be asleep as Smith entered the cage. Smith acknowledged Pereira’s sense of humor and intelligence, stating that he enjoys the back-and-forth banter between them.

Smith’s victory at UFC 301 not only marked his first win in Brazil but also solidified his position as a top contender in the light heavyweight division. Reflecting on his career and approach to fighting, Smith credited Glover Teixeira, Pereira’s close friend and coach, for imparting valuable life and career advice.

As the feud between Smith and Pereira continues to capture the attention of MMA fans, it remains to be seen whether the two fighters will eventually face off in the Octagon. For now, Smith is focused on taking each fight as it comes, following Teixeira’s advice to approach each challenge with patience and determination.
