Anti-war protests shake US colleges

McGill University, one of Canada’s most prestigious schools, is facing a challenging situation as it seeks to shut down a pro-Palestinian student encampment that has been growing on its Montreal campus. The university is set to go to court on Monday to seek an injunction to compel the protesters to take down their tents and leave the property after more than two weeks of occupation.

The encampment, which began on the weekend of 27 April, has grown from fewer than two dozen tents to about 115, according to the university’s estimates. The protesters have dubbed the site the Montreal Popular University of Gaza, and their presence has attracted large numbers of both supporters and counter-protesters, leading to escalating tensions on campus.

McGill President Deep Saini expressed concerns about the safety implications of the encampment, citing a lack of escape routes in case of a fire and other safety issues. The university is also facing financial challenges, as it estimates it will have to spend at least C$700,000 ($512,000) to relocate spring graduation events scheduled to take place from 28 May to 5 June if the encampment is not dismantled soon.

The situation at McGill is part of a broader trend of unrest on college campuses in the US and Canada sparked by the Israel-Hamas conflict. Graduation ceremonies at various universities have been marred by protests from pro-Palestinian activists, leading to arrests, suspensions, and threats of expulsion.

At Duke University, comedian Jerry Seinfeld faced a walkout by students chanting “Free Palestine” during his keynote speech. Similar protests occurred at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, though most ceremonies proceeded without major disruptions.

In response to the protests, many universities have taken a hard line against student demonstrators, clearing encampments and cracking down on disruptive behavior. Columbia University cancelled its main graduation ceremony after protests led to a police raid and arrests, while MIT issued warnings to protesters before arresting 10 individuals at the end of a two-week encampment.

The situation in Israel, where the country is celebrating its 76th Independence Day amidst a ferocious war, adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing tensions. The cancellation of traditional celebrations, including fireworks and air force flyovers, reflects the somber mood in the country as it grapples with the aftermath of the conflict with Hamas.

As Israelis mourn the loss of civilians and soldiers in the conflict, the government is on high alert for potential disruptions during Independence Day events. The ongoing violence in Gaza, coupled with the unresolved issue of hostages held by Hamas, has cast a shadow over the celebrations, with many Israelis feeling a sense of insecurity and loss.
