Apple Inc. is set to launch a new app called Passwords, designed to simplify the login process for users on websites and software. The app is part of the upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 operating systems, and will be officially unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10.
Passwords will be powered by iCloud Keychain, a service that syncs passwords and account information across different Apple devices. By creating a dedicated app for this feature, Apple aims to encourage users to use secure passwords and enhance the privacy of their devices. The app will compete with popular password managers like 1Password and LastPass, allowing users to import passwords from other services.
The app will organize user logins into different categories such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and Passkeys, a password replacement feature that utilizes Face ID and Touch ID for authentication. Users will be able to auto-fill login information on websites and apps, making the login process more convenient.
In addition to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Passwords will also be compatible with the Vision Pro headset and Windows computers. It will support verification codes and function as an authentication app similar to Google Authenticator.
The launch of Passwords is just one part of Apple’s WWDC event, with a focus on artificial intelligence enhancements such as notification summaries, instant photo editing, AI-generated emoji, and an upgraded version of the Siri digital assistant. Apple will also announce a partnership with OpenAI to integrate the ChatGPT chatbot.
