Applications for Florida school vouchers nearly double from last year

Florida’s school voucher program, known as the Personalized Education Program (PEP), has seen a surge in popularity, nearly reaching its 20,000-student cap in its first year. With approximately 19,514 students funded, the program is allowed to grow by 40,000 students each year, potentially reaching 60,000 students by the 2024-2025 school year.

According to the News Service of Florida, 39,690 applications have already been submitted for the upcoming school year, with 31,991 of the 60,000 available vouchers already awarded as of Thursday.

The PEP offers students up to $7,700 that can be used for private school tuition, as well as other education expenses like private tutoring, college classes, and more. The program aims to provide families with choices in education, including private schools, charter schools, magnet schools, homeschooling, and public schools.

Governor Ron DeSantis expanded the program to include all K-12 students, removing previous requirements. Priority is given to students whose household income does not exceed 185% of the federal poverty level and those in foster care.

To apply for the Florida school voucher program, interested families can visit the Step Up For Students website and apply online. The program has specific requirements, including submitting and maintaining a Student Learning Plan annually and taking norm-referenced tests.
