Alberta Wildfire Update: Residents Urged to Protect Property and Obey Fire Bans

As wildfires continue to rage across Alberta, officials are urging residents living in forested areas to take action to protect their property and obey local fire bans or restrictions. With 63 wildfires currently burning in Alberta’s forest protection area and seven mutual aid fires, the risk of wildfires remains high due to dry and windy conditions.

Minister for forestry and parks, Todd Loewen, emphasized the importance of assessing property for wildfire danger and taking preventive action to address these risks. This includes breaking up fuel sources, removing trees near homes, and maintaining gutters and roofs to prevent ignition from leaves and dry needles.

Albertans are also reminded to be aware of fire bans or restrictions issued in their communities, as these measures play a crucial role in reducing human-caused wildfires. According to Alberta Wildfire information officer Josee St-Onge, while cool, wet weather is forecasted for many parts of the province, significant and continued rain is needed to overcome drought conditions and reduce the risk of wildfires.

As the province prepares for another wildfire update next Wednesday, residents are urged to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their property and prevent wildfires. By working together to mitigate the risk of wildfires, Albertans can help ensure the safety of their communities and the preservation of their natural surroundings.
