Holmes Miller, an architecture practice based in Glasgow and St Albans, has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a carbon neutral built environment with the release of a revamped sustainability charter. In response to the urgent need to address the climate crisis and meet government targets for net zero emissions, the practice has updated its 2020 charter to emphasize the integration of sustainability principles into all of its projects and services.

The new sustainability charter includes ambitious goals for the upcoming year, such as incorporating Passivhaus principles into design approaches, implementing an in-house embodied carbon assessment tool, and monitoring energy usage in both projects and office spaces. Additionally, the charter focuses on ethical considerations, including measures to enhance employee wellbeing, promote inclusive design principles, and support local communities through non-profit activities.

Holmes Miller has already taken significant steps towards sustainability, including signing up for the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge, investing in electric vehicles, and working on over 50,000m2 of Passivhaus projects. Managing Director Callum Houston emphasized the importance of sustainable buildings in creating long-term value for clients and communities, highlighting the practice’s expertise in guiding clients towards sustainable design solutions.

The sustainability charter reflects Holmes Miller’s proactive approach to sustainability and commitment to exceeding minimum sustainable standards in the built environment sector. By setting clear targets and regularly reviewing progress, the practice aims to lead by example and inspire others to prioritize sustainability in their projects. With a focus on tangible benefits such as reduced energy costs and improved occupant wellbeing, Holmes Miller is dedicated to creating buildings that have a positive impact on both the environment and the community.
